Ystad is a charming coastal town in southern Sweden, situated in the Skåne region. Known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, cobbled streets, and scenic coastal views, Ystad offers a blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural activities.
Things to See and Do in Ystad
Ystad’s Old Town
Ystad’s old town is a must-see, full of half-timbered houses dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Strolling through the narrow, cobbled streets like Stora Östergatan and Per Helsas Gård, visitors can soak in the charm of beautifully preserved buildings and quaint shops. The architecture offers a unique insight into Sweden’s medieval past.
St. Mary’s Church (Sankta Maria Kyrka)
Built in the 13th century, this church is one of the oldest and most iconic buildings in Ystad. Its striking red-brick facade and beautiful Gothic features are a testament to medieval Swedish architecture. The church is known for its bell chimes that ring several times a day, adding to the old-world atmosphere.
Ystad Abbey (Klostret i Ystad)
Another historical gem, Ystad Abbey was founded in 1267 and is one of Sweden’s best-preserved medieval monasteries. Today, it serves as a museum with exhibitions on art, local history, and artifacts from the abbey’s past. The gardens around the abbey are lovely, particularly in late summer and early autumn.
Ale’s Stones (Ales Stenar)
About 20 minutes from Ystad, Ales Stenar is a fascinating ancient stone formation that resembles England’s Stonehenge. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Baltic Sea, this megalithic structure dates back over 1,400 years. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding landscapes, especially beautiful in the golden light of September.
The Ystad Art Museum (Ystads Konstmuseum)
Art enthusiasts will enjoy the Ystad Art Museum, which features a diverse collection of modern and contemporary Swedish art. The museum focuses on local artists and offers a fascinating look at Skåne’s art scene, as well as rotating exhibitions from national and international artists.
Kåseberga Fishing Village
Near Ales Stenar, Kåseberga is a picturesque fishing village with colorful wooden houses and quaint fish smokehouses where visitors can sample fresh, smoked fish. It’s a lovely spot to relax by the sea and take in the local culture.
